PHISH FANS EVACUATE IN CHICAGO

IT appeared at first that things would be horrendous on Northerly Island Friday night. The weather reports ominously foretold thunderstorms, and the venue reports (especially about the lawn) in the weeks before the show were bleak. But as Phish opened with “Suzy Greenberg,” the crowd roared with glee.

The weather was as gorgeous as gorgeous could be, with an intermittent breeze cooling down the 90+ degree ambient temperature under a largely blue sky. The set featured a funkalicious “Wolfman’s Brother,” and Fish dazzlingly engaging the audience on the Marimba Lumina during “Scent of a Mule.” There was also a memorably must-hear version of “Limb by Limb,” masterfully crazy-fingered by Trey. Fans danced-off calories left and right, including calories earned pre-show drinking copious amounts of “Sample” ale in mason jars at Rock Bottom brewpub’s wonderful, all-weekend fundraiser for The Mockingbird Foundation, whose volunteers manage this site.

It was easily among the tour’s finest first sets. What would the second set bring? Would we get yet another powerful second set of tour, fans wondered as the sky steadily darkened, and lightning began to twist and pounce on the horizon, both Page, and Mike, side.

DWD -> Fuckerpants’ed.

FACTSAREUSELESS Oh to be Prince Caspian...with nothing to return to but the demons in their caves. ;)

jwp86 Wow...really a head scratcher. Seems like there could have been several better ways to handle the weather last night. Given the mere possibility of a truncated 2nd set, one would have at least expected a huge 1st set. Hopefully, tonight will be epic.

TheEmu All of you guys hating on Caspian just suck! You just suck the big one! I'm sorry. I’m getting emotional. I love Caspian, I love every version of Caspian…Sorry, I just, I REALLY LOVE CASPIAN. I just want to hug all of them but I can’t ‘cause that’s crazy. I can’t hug every Caspian. I just want to, I want to, I want to! I’m sorry, I just, I get, anytime I hear Caspian, I just, I love Caspian um, WHOO! Promised myself I wouldn’t cry, um, so anyway, I AM A CASPIAN LOVER. Um, and I, love to dance...um, I’m sorry, I’m thinking about Caspian again...I just, I think about how many aren't appreciated and how I should have them and how cute they are and their melodies and the lights and the "Oh!." I just love them and I want them and I want them in a basket and with little bow ties I want them to be on a rainbow and in my bed and I just want a house, full of them and I just want us to roll around. I can’t, I can’t...

PhreePhish I suppose we could say that this was just the Chicago Park District overblowing the situation-> The rain didn't fall until half an hour after they stopped the show and the lightning wasn't that close.

But with that many people there I guess you can't take any chances. The first set was basically a warmup and the DWD was going places until it got ripcorded.

Had some afterward. I bunch of us snuck into the disco tent in the back for a while before we were kicked out. For the rain we were under a pavilion at the yatch club nearby. Now when Page made the announcement, he said it would blow over in half an hour and they'd come back (not that the decision is up to him or anything). No one told us the whole thing was cancelled really. I went back into the venue around 10:30 or so and went to the front row where the crew finally told us it was all over for the night (11pm cerfew). I then got drenched walking back to my car in the lot at Soldier Field.

Interesting night...

Just_Ivy Yep.

Even Mother Nature takes a leak during Fuckerpants.

I don't expect it to be "made up" by the band because, after all, the band doesn't owe us anything (and it's certainly not going to be made up by a night of GD covers). I do expect two nights of incredible music, as per usual. I feel sorry for the fans that are there but at least you don't have to wait 2 weeks for them to play like fans in Toronto.

Until then, keep your eyes on the skies ("Watcher of the Skies" bustout tonight??)

I know there are Caspian haters out there (I'm not one of them either), but I think the point people were trying to make was they would have rather heard DWD jammed out for more than 10 min before it segued into to something, anything else.

frankstallone Watched the webcast, couldn't figure out what the hell Page was doing pacing around behind Trey right after the caspian ripcord. Then he finally gets up the courage and breaks the news to Trey... I figured out what was going on at that point and busted out laughing when Trey said "You Tell Them". Page always seems to have to deliver the bad news

About the 11 minute mark of this video if you missed it

Poizon45 Once Prince Caspian started i kinda wanted the show to end anyways. Also i wouldn't mind 1/2 my money back, since we only got 1/2 a show. Otherwise they gotta bring it tonite and tomorrow!

PHISHE_1 Pearl Jam played until 2:06 AM...sure us PHISH phans could have stayed up that late!! How about one huge set tonight, no set break....or just Gamehendge, that is all!

CanadianPhan Hey folks. It is my fault. I brought the bad vibes of the Toronto washout down to Chicago with me. I have been rained out of my last three events (Canada's Wonderland with my family on Monday July 8, Phish in Toronto on July 9 and now night one of Chicago). Mother nature sure is a biotch :)

PennPhan What's this curfew crap? Pearl Jam restarted playing at Wrigley at almost 11 and played til 2. They had the same curfew as Phish.

I think I've only seen one Caspian ever. Woudn't mind seeing one again.

The Parks Administration of Chicago runs Northerly Island and ALL city parks close at 11PM. Wrigley is not under such restictions, as I understand it.
, comment by kernalforbin1983
kernalforbin1983 It probably has to do with the area they are in. plus pearl jam was only one night if i believe and also eddie veder is from chicago and probaly didnt want to end that short.
, comment by frankstallone
frankstallone Wrigley Field can offer protection to fans during the storm. its a huge structure and people can be sent inside to protect them from dangerous weather while they wait for it to pass over

Northerly Island is just a temporary venue, with no pavilion or permanent structure or any safe place they can send people for protection to wait it out, so they just have to get everyone out of there. If there was a place they could temporarily send fans while the storm passes and then continue the show obviously that's what they would have done, as they have done several times before. This venue doesn't give them that option

I hope you are not referring to me. I was just trying to inject some silliness; gotta smile, there is great stuff ahead. This tour really has been amazing; there is something for everyone. It is a nice 30 year blend of all eras, and great new stuff.

Above is link to CBS news with video. That's a bummer for all who went. I couldn't imagine what this would feel like.

PennPhan @Ivylight

Then Vedder and his bandmates made good on his promise – Pearl Jam did indeed play until 2 a.m., far past the Wrigley curfew of 11 p.m.

SunlightSplatters They played Prince Caspian, and the Lord in His anger did SMOTE them and cast them down. And I had to evacuate my couch. I was pissed.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer Each venue has its own curfew, though many venues in the same area will have the same curfew, typically for logistical reasons (but sometimes for "legal" reasons as it was in this case being under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Park District). In San Francisco, because the last BART train leaves (depending which stop) around 12:30, you never really get shows that go past midnight (or you see people taking off early to catch their trains). I realize it really sucks to go to a show and have the venue get evacuated perhaps due to the CPD being overcautious, but in this type of situation with a huge crowd, I'm all for abiding by the "better safe than sorry" rule. Hopefully Phish makes up for it tonight for all the phans that made the trek!

MikeD4398 Easily one of the finest first sets of tour so far? I find that to be greatly inaccurate. It was the same as every other first set so far this tour with the exception of merriweather (night 1 was getting there night 2 had the finest first set of tour so far). I actually found myself being quite bored with the first set last night save for maybe limb by limb. I always love an it's ice but after MPP's amazing version that didnt even really do it for me last night.

How was it on the floor last night. Any tips about how to get the most out of the experience?

Thank you for your help.
, comment by Shangho
Shangho I would think that the band playing 3 sets tonight would make up for last night, and a lot of people don't understand that bands are OFTEN at the mercy of the venues restrictions.being in many bands myself you are often given time restrictions and all sorts of other crap that is simply out of your control. We should all be happy that Destiny is back!I remember the days when it was more or less a given that outside of bootlegs we'd never hear it again!
, comment by thehurricane
thehurricane phantasy tour is a great place for info on streams and such but the trolling is stupid, they obviously don't hate phish or they wouldn't waste their time, phishnet is a way friendlier place, my thoughts are if you don't like it or want to bitch go see another band, I work hard so that I can do a west coast run in style, I pretty much plan my life around the phish summer tour, it makes me happy, their isn't another band on the planet that I am getting into a plane and paying for a hotel, the anticipation kills me. And I am convinced that they are aliens because humans cant rock like this.

nichobert People still bother to work up hate for Caspian?

Gotta love the lemmings syndrome.

"I read all these reviews from 95 where all the super heady fans hated Caspian the 3 minute, no jam song that seemed to get played every night, so now I bitch when I hear it and its currently evolving jam section 5 whole times a year"

Somehow even worse than people who still bitch about Bouncing.

Wahhhhhh I hate Treys sheet lightning guitar solo! I prob hated it after they simply slew it in Japan 99 and Albany 97s blown out psychedelic journey or the weird SPAC 12 version. It's Bug's morphine cocoon jam section without lyrics like "quite a bit like trying to heal a gunshot wound with gauze" - the kind of lyrics that make the people still complaining about Caspians slightly too on the nose wistfulness seem silly.

It's oh so close to being that guy who doesn't like DWD because they filmed a video for it. Did you know there are still people who think that way? In 2013? And will argue with you and say that they've jammed it a few times but it's usually a 5 minute sell out song?

Sorry. I'm just sitting here thinking of people's reactions to the DWD video and I can't stop laughing. Or any fanbase who got bent out of shape when their favorite band decided to dip their toes into playing with cameras. Or god fucking forbid, every time they write a song you can sing along to.
